Hybrid Collision-Free Medium Access UPMAC: Receiver initiated spectrum management HCFMA: Underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASN), machine learning medium access control (MAC) protocol, full duplex transmission, network throughput, and end-to-end delay.Ĭarrier sense multiple access with collision avoid DTMAC: Simulation results and analysis exhibited that the proposed protocol performs significantly better than state-of-the-art MAC protocols for UASN on network throughput, end-to-end delay and transmission fairness. In addition, as a unique characteristic of underwater acoustic communication, propagation time in the transmission is taken into consideration in the design of the MAC protocol. ![]() In this way, transmission resources can be used more efficiently and fairer. A hybrid scheme is utilized in the uplink to maximize the network throughput to meet transmission requirements of monitoring data collected by sensor nodes. The access scheme of the downlink is contention free to ensure that command information can be delivered to sensor nodes with a low collision rate. ![]() The proposed protocol is designed in different access schemes for uplink and downlink transmission according to their main uses, respectively. In this paper, a full machine learning-based duplex medium access control (MAC) protocol for single hop underwater acoustic sensor networks is proposed to enhance the performance on throughput, delay and fairness access. Advances in the development of underwater full duplex sensors have meant they can now provide solutions to underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASN) that suffer from narrow bandwidth and long end-to-end transmission delay. Hold firm to the commonplace: we do think what is not. If that is right, then what seemed to be a thought is, after all, nothing. When I think, however, what is not, that Antarctica is tropical, then there is nothing in the world for me to think: Antarctica is, after all, not tropical. But consider: when I think what is, that Antarctica is frozen, then the world has within it something for me to think, for Antarctica is frozen. It can be difficult to feel the force of this argument, precisely because its conclusion is so repellent. And if one says or thinks nothing, then one does not say or think at all. It is impossible, he argues, to think or say what is not. But in his poem On Nature, the pre-Socratic philosopher Parmenides presents an argument that purports to contradict this commonplace. It can seem a commonplace to point out that we can think both what is-say, that Antarctica is frozen-and what is not-say, that Antarctica is tropical. These questions-what is thought, what is nature and what is the difference between them-are as old as philosophy itself, and their first answer holds that thought of what is not is simply impossible. So it seems that thought, which involves what is not as well as what is, may be nowhere in nature. When I entertain a falsehood, or consider how things are not, what I think is not anywhere out there in the world. And while the breeze is warm, I can think, truly now, of many ways that it is not-for instance, chilly-simply by thinking that it is not chilly. Though the weather is fine, I can think of it being grim-I can think what is false. Thinking, however, is not only about how things are-the warm breeze and the buzzing bees-but also about how they aren’t. Why is thought so special? Consider the natural world, which consists just of things and how they are: the breeze is warm, the lawn is lush, the bees buzz. What Kimhi wants to show is that the logical features of thought, and so also the features of those who think them, stand at a far remove from anything we might now call “natural.” And so, he argues, a whole tradition of philosophical thought is wrong, not just in the details, but in the fundamentals. An elusive new book, Thinking and Being, by Irad Kimhi, a heretofore little-known Israeli philosopher, argues that this is the wrong answer. But what is so special about the ability to think? In other words, what is so special about us? Analytic philosophy finds its foundations in an answer: not very much. Being able to think is, it seems, uniquely characteristic of us. Of all the ways that human beings differ from the rest of what is found in nature, being able to think is most fundamental. ![]() ![]() The 360 runs with a noticeably darker image by default, which can become problematic given the number of dark indoor areas and nighttime levels in the game. The cutscenes are all rendered in the game engine and offer some really impressive sequences, frequently showing a scene in splitscreen in a nod to its manga roots. It mirrors the presentation and aesthetic of the animated series with remarkable accuracy. PS3 Presentation Afro Samurai is a fantastic looking game on both consoles. If you're hoping to get more for your money than a trip through the story campaign, the 360 version is the better choice. If you're not interested in achievements, both versions are essentially the same. The game controls identically on both consoles, and the main game content is exactly the same. Ultimately, the 360 version of the game is a better choice in this category, but only because of the added value of achievements. Both controllers work equally as well, though it should be noted you'll have to manage the camera a good deal, as much or more than any action game in recent memory, so which ever set of analog sticks you feel most comfortable with should do the trick. There are no extra motion controls for the SixAxis, but DualShock 3 owners will be covered with rumble support. This basically slows down time and turns everything black and white while you charge an extra powerful sword stroke. You can enter Focus mode with the left trigger on 360 or the L1 button on PS3. The control setup is a relatively simple one, with a light and heavy attack (A and Y or Square and Triangle), a jump button (X button on both), and a kick button to push opponents back (B or Square). The game controls similarly on the 360 and PS3. There is no install required in the PS3 version. Absent any extra modes to keep you going after the single player campaign is finished, the prospect of chasing down achievements can add another four or five hours of enjoyment to the experience, but you'll only be able to do that on the 360 version. The 360 version has achievements, but the PS3 offers no Trophy support which is an unfortunate omission. There an extra difficulty setting to be grappled with once you beat the game, and you'll unlock the ability to examine the treasures you've collected from the main menu, and that's basically it. The single player campaign should take between 6-8 hours for most players. Content and Control Afro Samurai is a straight-up single player game, there are no multiplayer modes, or online support. Your money will get you a game disc and a nice plastic box to keep it in. There are no special editions or bonuses to be had. Price Point Afro Samurai is available for $59.99 on both Xbox 360 and PS3. So you're sold on the world of Afro Samurai but aren't sure which version will best for you? Keep reading for help choosing between the PS3 and Xbox 360! For a more detailed look at Afro Samurai check out Greg Miller's review of the PlayStation 3 version and Xbox 360 version. This is definitely a game that's earned its M rating in every category. It's also one of the bloodiest games in recent memory, allowing you to measure the actual gallons of blood you've shed as you progress. The game retells the origin story, which will already be familiar to fans of the series, and features distinctive voice work from Samuel L. Based on the popular Gonzo animated series, Afro Samurai is a bloody and surreal action game, equal parts metaphysical cotton candy and methodical combo-based sword mastery. ![]() It's not as expensive as it used to be, but still fairly pricy considering the cost of the options higher up on our list. The pricing still seems aimed at the corporate market, with a new one-year licence for the 2021 version starting at $474. The main reason QuarkXPress is not higher on this list is the cost. It offers impressive functionality for both print and digital design, and, it can import InDesign files. It can be used to create everything from posters and flyers to brochures, catalogues, and magazines, as well as ebooks and web and mobile apps. QuarkXPress is actually a very powerful and well-featured DTP package that definitely gives InDesign a run for its money.Īvailable for PC or Mac, the software is still updated on an annual basis, usually around late spring/early summer. QuarkXPress dates back to 1987, and while InDesign has since completely stolen its thunder, it's still available and it remains a good InDesign alternative. The package has a one-off cost of £49.99 / £48.99, with a few templates thrown in, making it a good value if not an entirely comprehensive InDesign alternative get all the facts in our Affinity Publisher review.īack in the days before InDesign was even a thing, QuarkXPress (opens in new tab) was the only serious desktop publishing package in the game in the 1990s and into the early years of this century it could be found in every design studio and publishing house. ![]() There’s no iPad version yet, but you can open, edit and export Affinity Publisher documents in Affinity Designer for iPad and the iPad version of Affinity Photo. Which would have been a major improvement because on this second unit, the locking slider is slightly stickier, and doesn't drop unless I smack the unit after locking it. Simply add extra wood to divide the shelves, and then define each 'room' by using different wallpaper, paint, or fabric. While this IKEA hack is definitely off the beaten path, it's pretty easy to accomplish. If I'd realized that the first time, I might have just removed the screws and not returned it. Storage units and cabinets keep it all under control, with different sizes and styles to match your decor. They'll fall head over heels for this adorable Billy bookcase-turned-dollhouse. It's not clear that the screws do anything to secure it anyway, and the bottom isn't load-bearing if you use the rails to hang files. Doesn't matter the orientation, there's none in which the pilot holes line up. Then it turns out that if you line up the pilot holes in the large drawer bottom with the side brackets, they push out the front of the drawer and prevent it from locking. The King of Salvagers, Masira! pictures or movies, or for the windows that contain GUIs implemented by incompetent programmers in Java with typefaces sized in pixels, instead of using scalable typefaces sized in points, like any decent (non-Java) GUI. Scaling is never needed per monitor, but only per window, either for the windows containing bitmap images, i.e. With the right DPI value, all typefaces and vector drawings will be rendered beautifully. The correct way to deal with monitor resolutions is to set for each monitor the appropriate dots-per-inch value, depending on the monitor size and resolution. Nevertheless, I still cannot understand why would anyone want to use any kind of "scaling" in relationship with a monitor.Īny kind of "scaling" is guaranteed to generate sub-optimal images. Vsync works, but I must choose with which of the monitors.įor about a decade, I have used only 4k monitors, even starting with the early models that were seen by the computer as multiple monitors, because HDMI and DisplayLink could not carry 4k 60 Hz on a single link at that time. On the contrary, some of the ideas on which Wayland was originally based were definitely wrong and they have shown that the Wayland developers lacked experience about how many computers are used.Įven if a part of the initial mistakes have been patched meanwhile, that lack of vision at the Wayland origin makes me skeptical even about the quality level of the Wayland parts about which I do not know anything.Īll my monitors are fixed 60 Hz, so I have never used variable refresh and there is no scrolling stutter. Nevertheless, I have not seen any argument yet that would indicate that Wayland is the appropriate replacement for X11. X11 is very far from an ideal graphics system and I would like to see it replaced by a better system, which would still have to also implement the X protocol for the legacy applications. I have no experience with variable refresh, but I have been using up to three monitors with different resolutions, up to 4k, under X11, for almost a decade, without any problems whatsoever (mostly with NVIDIA GPUs, where their Settings utility simplifies the configuration of a multi-monitor layout). Now, I really want to ask - where are we heading here? Are we really stepping forward? I don't think so. These missing special features now need to be implemented explicitly as "protocols". Everything works in the exact same way, but things happen in slightly different places, and some features are banned by policy (arbitrarily outlined by wayland devs). It's a large-scale refactoring & optimization of the modern day X11 desktop ecosystem. It's mostly just pure grunting - a showcase of large engineering horsepower. ![]() Some might think Wayland is a smart approach, but it's actually not. We are losing smartness for the sake of grunting. If you read their code, you'll instantly notice that they are becoming more and more labor-intensive, and less and less hacker-friendly. Redhat-funded projects are really leading this trend (I'm looking at you systemd, the project). MVP), I think it does come with a cost - you get a large corpus of low density code that gives a lot of surprises in many different corners. The presenter mentioned "use-case over mechanism/policy", but, given a good mechanism, use-cases are just policies.Īlthough I do understand the value of the current approach in the industry (i.e. ![]() I'm not talking about exposing user-friendly configuration options, but is about mechanism-over-policy. Not really a relevant thing to talk about here, but I find there's this trend in Linux ecosystem that people are explicitly implementing more and more policies on the code level instead of making flexible abstractions and data-fying user decisions. |
